Travelling has become more expensive than ever—expensive flights, hotel stays, restaurants, and whatnot. It may seem impossible to fly without spending thousands, but with some planning and careful spending, you can enjoy many destinations without going broke.

Our experience of airport transfers and serving hundreds of travellers have taught us a thing or two about travelling on a budget. Here are some tips that may help you too.

Plan Ahead

When you plan ahead, you have enough time to explore different airlines, airport transfers, accommodations, and other activities. This way, you can compare and contrast, choose the ones that fall under your budget (and are reliable) and eliminate a lot of stress.

Even booking flights earlier make a huge difference, and you get to save money.

Avoid Hotels if Possible

Hotels are great if you’re travelling solo, but if you’re in a group, it’s best to rent an apartment. They cost less than hotels even if you’re planning an extended stay. You can also find a location nearer to all touristy spots to save transport costs.

You can also opt for hostels for an even economical stay. Most travellers only use hotel rooms to keep their luggage or catch some sleep, so paying thousands of pounds doesn’t make sense. Hostels may not give you the luxuries of a hotel stay, but they are gentle on your pocket.

Fly Strategically

Many airlines offer discounted rates on certain days (mostly weekdays). Try to fly on those days. You can also save money by letting the airline assign you a seat and skipping on-flight meals. Bring your snack and water or get something to eat from the airport.

If you’re not carrying much stuff, fly with a carry-on bag to skip baggage fees on every flight. This will also reduce the chances of losing your luggage or waiting in queues.

Avoid Impulse Shopping

It’s quite challenging to keep yourself from buying every little thing you find while travelling. You don’t even need most of the stuff or could easily find an affordable alternative. Take pictures, make memories and do things that offer the most value instead of spending all your travel money on souvenirs. When you travel with just a carry-on bag, you’ll automatically shop less due to a lack of luggage space (unless you’re a true shopaholic and buy new suitcases).

Get Wi-Fi to Go

You’ll find rentable mobile routers known as “pocket Wi-Fi” that cost lower than international roaming charges. These devices are convenient and affordable, and you can have them delivered to your hotel/apartment.

Explore Local Supermarkets for Food

Instead of throwing money away at overly expensive mediocre restaurants, try to cook your own meals. This will work if you’ve rented an apartment. Local supermarkets have a lot of stuff to offer, and most of it is inexpensive. You’ll also find some ready-to-eat options.

If you don’t have time to cook, eat at local eateries than fancy restaurants because they are much tastier and reasonably priced.
